When designing our
new studio, we consciously embraced the concept of ahimsa (non-violence) towards our planet. Being environmentally mindful is one way we can integrate
what we learn on the mat with our life off the mat. We are proud that our new
studio is one of the greenest in the state. How are we lowering
our carbon footprint? We started with a lot orientation that regulates
temperature by having part of the building in-ground; dirt is cheap and a
fantastic insulator! The above-ground section is south-facing for passive solar
heat and low enough on the hill to minimize wind disturbance. The exterior
stone was recovered during the excavation process and then recycled to adorn
the south-facing wall. We included a
metal roof, closed-cell insulation, ceiling fans, a catalytic wood-burning
stove, and a split-system HVAC that together reduces our energy usage by 50%! Our building
materials are primarily sustainable Kentucky hardwoods, milled locally. The
studio is filled with natural light and features compact fluorescent light
(CFL) fixtures to minimize energy consumption. The toilet and shower head
are low-flow, and the interior and exterior paint is low VOC (volatile organic
compound). Many of you have commented that the studio smells like wood and doesn't have the toxic odor of so many new buildings. Our yoga practice teaches us about the intimate
relationship we have with the natural world. By becoming more conscious of
our impact on the earth, we can move toward living in harmony with the natural
world.
